Seaholme is a small pocket, and it is the suburb where we are strictest about hardware specification. Not because the electrical work is different, but because the environment is. Gear that lasts fifteen years in Sunshine North can look tired in seven here.

The short answer

Solar installation in Seaholme is defined by direct salt exposure. Standard mounting rail, fixings and DC isolator enclosures corrode noticeably faster this close to Port Phillip Bay, so marine-grade hardware is a requirement rather than an upgrade. Seaholme is a Powercor address for connection approval and export limits. Compact original beachside blocks with tight side access mean arrays here are commonly 5kW to 6.6kW, at roughly $3,000 to $6,000 after federal STCs.

It is also two kilometres from our Jordan Close workshop, which means site visits, return visits and warranty attendance are genuinely quick. On a coastal install where you want the installer to still be around in year eight, that is not a trivial consideration.

Salt is the design constraint

Seaholme sits closer to open water than almost anywhere else we cover. Salt-laden air reaches rooftop hardware constantly, and the failure pattern is predictable: pitting on standard aluminium rail, corrosion at dissimilar-metal contact points, and DC isolators that seize or admit moisture years before the panels degrade.

The answer is marine-grade specification throughout: coastal-rated rail and clamps, stainless fixings, correct isolation between dissimilar metals, and properly sealed and rated enclosures with the isolator mounted where it is not sitting in the prevailing weather. It adds modestly to material cost and removes the most likely reason a Seaholme system needs attention before its time.

    Standard anodising is not enough this close to open water. We specify coastal-rated components on every Seaholme roof.

  • Sealed, sheltered isolators

    Position matters as much as the enclosure rating. An isolator in the weather is an isolator with a shorter life.

  • Dissimilar metal isolation

    Salt accelerates galvanic corrosion where steel meets aluminium. Correct isolation washers are cheap insurance.

Small roofs and honest system sizing

Seaholme blocks are compact original beachside lots, and the housing is a mix of original homes and rebuilds on the same footprints. Some rebuilt Colorbond roofs give a clean modern plane. Plenty of original roofs are smaller, cut up by hips and vents, and constrained by height restrictions near the foreshore.

What that means practically is that 5kW to 6.6kW is a realistic target on most Seaholme roofs, and a proportion of them will land lower. We would rather tell you that at the quote than design an array that cannot be installed compliantly with the required edge setbacks and access clearances.

Tight access changes the cable route

Side access in Seaholme is often narrow enough that the straightforward route from array to switchboard does not exist. Cable routing usually has to be planned around the building rather than through it, which means the DC and AC runs are longer and the inverter position needs thinking about rather than defaulting to next to the meter box.

This is the part of a quote that separates a walked site from a phone estimate. We measure the actual route before pricing, because on constrained blocks that route is a real cost line rather than a rounding error.

Powercor, costs and rebates

Seaholme is a Powercor address. Powercor handles pre-approval for the grid connection and decides whether an export limit applies. We lodge that application before install day and confirm the outcome before anything is energised.

On price, a quality 6.6kW system is $4,500 to $8,500 before incentives and roughly $3,000 to $6,000 after federal STCs worth $2,000 to $3,000. Solar Victoria Solar Homes adds up to $1,400 for eligible households, with a $150,000 combined income cap from 1 July 2026. Seaholme also has some of the oldest surviving switchboards in the area, so a board upgrade at $800 to $3,500 or more is a real possibility worth checking before you commit.

  • This is the most salt-exposed pocket we install in. Marine-grade rail, stainless fixings and sealed isolator enclosures are the baseline specification here, not an optional extra.
  • Foreshore height restrictions and small original roof planes mean 5kW to 6.6kW is a realistic ceiling for many homes, with some coming in lower once edge setbacks are applied.
  • Some of the oldest switchboards in the district sit in unrenovated Seaholme homes. A solar circuit cannot land on a ceramic-fuse board, so the upgrade becomes part of the scope.
  • Tight side access means the cable route is planned around the building. Two quotes can differ substantially purely on how the DC and AC runs were priced.

It shortens the life of the mounting hardware and isolators if standard components are used. Panels and inverters are less affected. With marine-grade rail, stainless fixings, correct dissimilar-metal isolation and properly sealed enclosures, a Seaholme system should reach the same service life as an inland one.
