Solar Panel Installation in Altona Meadows

A large single-storey estate roof gives you the two things a big array needs: continuous unbroken plane length for full-size strings, and clear northern and western faces without a two-storey neighbour cutting into them. Plenty of Altona Meadows homes can take 10kW or more without splitting the array across four orientations.

The honest caveat is that roof capacity is not a reason to buy capacity. Since Victoria removed the mandatory minimum feed-in tariff on 1 July 2025, exports pay under 5 cents per kWh while peak imports cost 30 to 45 cents. A 10kW array only beats a 6.6kW one if you consume the extra generation, which usually means ducted cooling on a daytime timer, a heat pump hot water service, a pool, or an EV that charges at home during the day.

Altona Meadows is Powercor territory. Powercor runs the pre-approval process and decides whether an export limit applies to your connection, and larger systems attract closer scrutiny than a standard 5kW inverter does. That is normal, and it is why we lodge the application early rather than after the panels are on the roof.

Where an export limit is applied, the inverter is configured to comply and the system keeps generating for your own consumption without restriction. Under current tariffs that is a small cost, provided the array was designed to be used rather than sold.

Boards from the 1980s and 1990s here generally have circuit breakers but not RCD protection on every final subcircuit. A new solar circuit brings its own requirements, and in a lot of Meadows homes the sensible move is to bring the board up to current standard at the same time rather than paying twice for the same electrician on the same wall.

The other Meadows quirk is distance. Wide estate blocks with double garages mean the run from meter box to garage, or from inverter to switchboard, is often much longer than in an inner suburb. Cable is cheap, but a 25 metre run is not the same job as a 5 metre one, so we measure it before pricing.

The Meadows is not beachfront, but it is close enough to Port Phillip Bay and Skeleton Creek that salt still reaches outdoor equipment. We use coastal-rated mounting hardware and sealed isolator enclosures on the streets closer to the water, particularly around Boardwalk Boulevard and the Cherry Lake side.

It is a small specification change and it prevents a specific, predictable failure: a seized rooftop isolator six or seven years in, on a system that otherwise had a decade left in it.
