The short answer
Solar installation in Newport turns on tree shading more than orientation. The roofs themselves are good: original tiled hips and gables with genuine northern exposure. The complication is what is growing in front of them. Newport has mature street trees and established gardens, and that shading is the difference between a system that performs as quoted and one that quietly does not.
Modelling the shade properly
A tree is not a fixed shadow. It moves through the day, changes with the season, and grows. Assessing it properly means looking at where the shadow falls in winter as well as summer, and being realistic about the next ten years rather than the current afternoon.
On a conventional string, one shaded panel pulls the whole string down. So the first design lever is layout: keeping shaded and unshaded panels on separate strings or separate MPPT inputs. Bundling the board, the wiring and the array

Doing board, solar and a heat pump hot water changeover as one planned job typically costs meaningfully less than three visits, and it lets us shift the hot water onto a daytime timer so the new array actually has something to feed.
Coastal hardware, even a street back from the bay
Newport is close enough to the water that salt still reaches rooftop equipment, particularly on the Williamstown side and around Newport Park. Mounting rail, fixings and DC isolator enclosures should be coastal-rated here for the same reason they are in Altona and Seaholme.
It is a modest specification change with a clear payoff: no seized isolators and no corroded rail on a system that otherwise has a decade of life left in it.
Jemena approval and system sizing
Newport is a Jemena address. Jemena handles pre-approval and sets any export limit based on network capacity. Neighbouring Seaholme is Powercor, so the process changes across a very short distance and the address decides which applies.
Sizing here is usually 5kW to 6.6kW on a period home with good roof planes, sometimes more where the roof is generous and shading is limited. On price, a quality 6.6kW system is $4,500 to $8,500 before incentives and roughly $3,000 to $6,000 after STCs, with up to $1,400 more for eligible households through Solar Homes under the $150,000 combined income cap from 1 July 2026.
