Two kilometres from our workshop, and the saltiest job we do

EV Charger Installation in Seaholme

Seaholme is a small pocket, two kilometres from our workshop, and it is the suburb where we are strictest about hardware. Homes here sit close to the Altona Coastal Park and Kororoit Creek mouth and take direct salt exposure. Standard plated fixings and unrated glands fail here at a rate we do not see even in Altona proper.

The short answer

EV charger installation in Seaholme costs $1,200 to $2,200 for a single phase 7kW wall unit, with switchboard upgrades adding $800 to $2,500 because Seaholme holds some of the oldest surviving boards in the area. A 7.4kW charger adds roughly 40 to 50km of range per hour. Direct salt exposure from the foreshore means outdoor mounting hardware and isolators need marine grade treatment, and tight side access usually forces the cable around the building rather than through it.

The other Seaholme characteristic is tightness. The original beachside blocks are compact, side access is often less than a metre, and half the stock has been rebuilt or extended right up to the setback. That does not stop a charger going in, but it does mean the cable route needs planning rather than assuming.

Planning the cable route on a tight block

On a standard suburban block we route a charger cable through the roof space, down an internal cavity and out where we want it. In Seaholme the roof space is often small, the extension has a flat or skillion roof with no access, and the side path is too narrow to work in comfortably.

So the route usually goes around the building. Surface conduit along a fascia or a rendered wall, kept high and kept straight, then down to the charger. Done properly it looks deliberate. Done badly it looks like a garden hose stapled to the house. We plan the run at the quote and show you exactly where it will sit before anyone drills anything.

  • Walk it first

We measure the actual route, not the straight line distance. On a Seaholme block the two numbers can differ by ten metres.

  • High and straight

Conduit under the eave line, dropping vertically at the charger. Fewer bends, less visual mess, easier to maintain.

  • Avoid the salt face

Where there is a choice of walls, the charger goes on the side that does not take the prevailing weather off the water.

Marine grade is not an upsell in this postcode

Salt corrosion here is not theoretical. We replace outdoor isolators in Seaholme that would have lasted twenty years four suburbs inland. The charger enclosure itself is generally fine, because manufacturers build them to an outdoor IP rating, but everything around it is fair game.

Our standard here is stainless mounting hardware, coastal rated cable glands, a weather shield or eave position wherever the building allows one, and an isolator in a suitably rated enclosure. We also suggest a fresh water rinse of the outside of the unit and the isolator once or twice a year, the same advice we give for air conditioning condensers on this street network.

Old boards, and why they come first

Seaholme has some of the oldest switchboards we still find in service. Unrenovated beachside homes that changed hands rarely can still be running rewireable fuses and unearthed circuits. An EV charger cannot connect to that, and honestly nor should a modern kitchen.

A board replacement runs $800 to $3,500 depending on the meter panel, the consumer mains and whether the main earth needs to be re-established. It is money that does far more than enable the car. It brings RCD protection to the whole house, which in a home with original wiring is the single highest value electrical spend available.

Parking, and what actually gets charged

Some Seaholme homes have a proper driveway and garage. Plenty of the older, unrebuilt ones do not, and the car lives on the street. If that is you, be honest with yourself before spending on a charger. A wall unit is only useful if the car can be parked within lead reach of it, and running a cable across a public footpath is not a legal or safe arrangement.

Where street parking is the reality, the options are a charger mounted at the front boundary reachable from a hardstand you create, workplace charging, or a slower solution using an existing outlet on a dedicated circuit for the nights the car can be brought into the yard. We would rather tell you that at the quote than take the money.

For the homes that do have off street parking, Seaholme is straightforward. Single phase, a short run to a carport or garage wall, marine grade hardware, and a Certificate of Electrical Safety at the end. Most of those jobs are a half day once the board has been confirmed as capable of carrying the new circuit.

On the ground

Seaholme specifics

  • Direct foreshore exposure means standard plated fixings and unrated glands corrode noticeably faster here than two kilometres inland in Altona. Stainless and coastal rated hardware is our default in Seaholme, not an option.
  • Side access under a metre is common on the original beachside blocks, so the cable route often goes around the building on surface conduit rather than through the roof space.
  • Rebuilt homes on original Seaholme blocks frequently have flat or skillion rear roofs with no access, which removes the easy internal route that most suburbs offer.
  • Some of the oldest surviving switchboards in the western suburbs are in Seaholme. Where the board still has rewireable fuses, the board replacement is the real project and the charger is the easy part.

Seaholme questions

The enclosure itself is built to an outdoor IP rating and copes well. What fails early in Seaholme is everything around it: plated mounting screws, unrated cable glands, the isolator enclosure and any exposed steel bracket. We use stainless fixings and coastal rated glands as standard here, and a fresh water rinse once or twice a year makes a genuine difference to how the installation ages.
