Retrofit into a house somebody has lived in for decades
A house that has been in the same hands for thirty years has an installation that grew with the family. A circuit added for a workshop, another for a sunroom, a board extended twice, and lighting that has been replaced piecemeal. None of it is necessarily wrong. It is simply undocumented and uneven.
The useful first step is a proper test and a written picture of what is there, then a sensible order of works rather than everything at once. Protection first, then the things that actually improve daily life. Switch and outlet heights that actually suit the household
This comes up more in Drysdale than anywhere else we work. Standard outlet heights near the skirting are awkward for anyone who does not want to bend to the floor, and standard switch positions are not always where they are useful. Raising outlets, adding them at bench height and putting switches where they can be reached is small work with a large daily effect.
The same thinking applies to lighting. Higher light levels, better placement over stairs and in bathrooms, sensor lighting on external paths and a light that comes on at the front door before you get to it. None of it is complicated. It just has to be planned for the person living there rather than to a builder default.

For a house in the older township, the practical implications are about visible hardware and about the fabric itself. Where conduit runs, where an outdoor unit sits and how equipment is fixed to older masonry all deserve the same thought a heritage job in Newtown would get, even where the property itself is not individually listed.

Solar on a big block, two kilometres from the bay
The large older Drysdale blocks generally give unshaded roof planes, hipped concrete tile and Colorbond at around 20 to 25 degrees on single storey homes, which is a good starting point. At around two to three kilometres from the bay at Clifton Springs there is moderate salt exposure, so outdoor hardware, rooftop isolators and rail fixings get specified for it.
