Lara is a 1960s to 1980s brick veneer township core wrapped in large estate subdivisions, sitting on a flat treeless basalt plain under the You Yangs. It is the closest part of the Geelong region to us at around 50km, and the closest part of the region to the M1 and the Melbourne commute.

The short answer
EV charger installation in Lara 3212 is driven by the cable run. Older township lots are 700 to 1,000 square metres with real driveway access to the rear, so a charger at a detached garage becomes a submain priced per metre rather than a simple circuit, while newer estate lots of 400 to 600 keep the run short. Both of those facts matter for a charger. The commute is what makes overnight home charging genuinely worth the installation here rather than a convenience, and the block sizes are what decide the price, because a 1,000 square metre township lot with the garage at the rear is a very different quote to a 450 square metre estate block.
Township blocks, estate blocks, two different quotes
Older Lara township lots are generous at 700 to 1,000 square metres with real driveway access to the rear. That is excellent for getting a cable where it needs to go and expensive for the same reason, because the distance from the meter to a detached rear garage is genuinely long.
Newer estate lots tighten to 400 to 600 square metres with only a narrow side path, and the garage is usually attached with the board nearby. Those installs sit at the lower end of $1,200 to $2,200. On a township block with a sixty metre run to the shed, the cable is the largest line on the invoice, not the charger.

Is the charger better at the house or at the shed
On a big Lara block the honest question is whether the car needs to charge inside the shed at all. Where it parks on the driveway most nights anyway, mounting the charger on the house wall near the board removes the entire submain cost, and that is often thousands rather than hundreds.
Where the shed already has a submain, we test whether it can carry a continuous 32A load before assuming a new one is needed. That check regularly avoids the largest cost on the job. Where a new submain is genuinely required, it usually justifies a sub-board at the shed rather than a single circuit.

Lara is the closest Geelong suburb to the M1, and a large share of households here have somebody making the Melbourne drive several days a week. That is a long daily round trip and it is exactly the pattern where home charging stops being a convenience and starts being the reason the car is affordable to run.
A 7.4kW charger adds roughly 40 to 50km of range per hour, so even a heavy commute is recovered in a few hours overnight. Charging that on an off peak tariff at home rather than at public rates on the freeway is where the saving actually is, and it is a stronger argument in Lara than almost anywhere else we work.

Lara sits on an exposed basalt plain, so wind loading on anything mounted outside is a real design input rather than a formality. For a charger that means fixing into structure rather than cladding, and thinking about whether a weather cover on an exposed elevation is going to act as a sail.
Grassfire risk also shapes building here. The January 1969 fire killed 17 people and destroyed 43 homes, and the surrounding plain still burns. On a rural fringe block that is a reason to put cable in conduit rather than clipped, to protect a run where it crosses open ground, and to think about where an isolator sits.

Single phase, boards and the paperwork
Lara streets are single phase on the Powercor network, so 32A and about 7.4kW is the ceiling. A conversion to three phase is not worth it for a car that sits at home for twelve hours, and on a large block the new consumer mains would face the same long run problem that makes everything else here expensive.
Board age tracks the build era. A 1960s or 70s township house may need a replacement at $800 to $3,500, while an estate home from the 1990s onward usually takes the charger straight up. We quote board work separately either way.
