The short answer
Norlane 3214 was built between 1947 and 1976, with the peak from 1951 to 1957, and more than 1,200 of its 2,464 houses were prefabricated units imported from Holland and France. Their wall construction is not what an electrician expects from Australian brick veneer, so cable routes are confirmed rather than assumed. Roofs are low to moderate pitch tile and steel with consistent street by street orientation, which makes yield unusually predictable. Powercor approves the connection.

The roofs are a different story and a much simpler one. Because the Commission planned these estates as a whole, orientation is consistent street by street, so once we have measured one house on a run we have a very good idea of what the neighbours will produce.
What the prefabricated houses change
The imported Dutch and French units use wall construction that an electrician trained on Australian brick veneer will not immediately recognise: different cavity behaviour, different fixings and different routes for getting a cable from a roof space down to a board.
None of that stops solar. It just means the cable route is confirmed on site instead of assumed, and the fixings used to mount an inverter or conduit are chosen for the actual wall rather than the expected one. Knowing this before quoting is the difference between a clean job and a surprise.

These houses were built for Ford, International Harvester and phosphate works employees in the early 1950s, and the original installations were sized for a fraction of a modern household load. A lot of them have had appliances added for seventy years without the supply side ever changing.
For solar that means the board is assessed before anything is designed. Where an upgrade is needed it runs $800 to $3,500 or more depending on what is behind the cover, and it is quoted as its own line so you can see what the solar itself actually costs.

A quality 6.6kW system is $4,500 to $8,500 before incentives and roughly $3,000 to $6,000 after federal STCs worth $2,000 to $3,000, with up to $1,400 available through Solar Homes for eligible households under the $150,000 combined income cap from 1 July 2026. Norlane is about 55km from us and is booked into a scheduled block.
