The short answer

Highton 3216 sits high on the Barrabool Hills, which gives it some of the least overshadowed roofs in Geelong and some of the strongest wind loading. Concrete tile and Colorbond hips at 20 to 25 degrees take a straightforward array, but mounting must be specified for the exposure rather than copied from a sheltered suburb, which means closer fixing spacing and shorter rail spans. The same elevation is the reason we do not use the same mounting hardware here that we would use on the flat. Wind uplift on an exposed ridge is a design input, not a formality, and it changes fixing spacing, rail span and how close panels sit to a roof edge.

Why yield is better up here

Two things drive it. The elevated position means very little overshadowing from neighbouring buildings, and the escarpment streets tend to have open aspects rather than a wall of two storey houses on the northern boundary.

Shallow 20 to 25 degree hips also spread well. On a typical Highton roof there is room for a full 6.6kW without splitting the array across four faces, and often room for 8kW to 10kW if there is a daytime load worth covering.

For a straightforward solar install it usually just means a longer AC run and a cable size chosen to keep voltage rise inside limits. Undersizing that cable is a common way to end up with an inverter that trips off in the middle of a good generating day.
