A working suburb, not a holiday one, which makes it easy to book

EV Charger Installation in Leopold

Leopold is overwhelmingly postwar dormitory-suburb stock, single-storey brick veneer from the 1960s through the 1990s, with large greenfield estates on the northern and eastern edges since 2000. Ninety two per cent of occupied dwellings are separate houses and only about four per cent sit empty.

The short answer

EV charger installation in Leopold 3224 costs $1,200 to $2,200 on single phase. Ninety two per cent of occupied dwellings here are separate houses and only about four per cent sit empty, so unlike much of the Bellarine this is a permanent-resident suburb where jobs can be scheduled normally. Powercor is the distributor. The 1970s and 80s stock that dominates usually has a serviceable board with limited spare ways, which is the constraint before a charger goes in.

That last figure matters more than it sounds. Most of the Bellarine has a serious holiday-home share, which makes access something to negotiate. Leopold is a working suburb where almost everyone is home in the evening and the houses are occupied year round, so it is one of the more straightforward places on the peninsula to schedule.

Serviceable boards with nothing spare

The 1970s and 80s stock that dominates Leopold usually has a board that is perfectly serviceable. Breakers rather than fuses, often some residual current protection added over the years, and nothing structurally wrong with it. What it typically does not have is a spare way, because three decades of added circuits have filled the enclosure.

A charger needs its own final subcircuit, so it needs a way. Where the board is full but healthy, a sub-board in the garage fed from the main board is often cheaper than replacing the main board, and it puts the protection right beside the charger. A full replacement runs $800 to $3,500 depending on the meter panel and consumer mains.

  • Load calculation first

On this stock the numbers matter before a charger or a heat pump goes on, and we run them properly.

  • Sub-board option

Often the cheaper answer on a full but healthy board, and it shortens the protected run to the charger.

  • Full replacement

$800 to $3,500 depending on the meter panel and consumer mains, quoted as its own line.

Older streets have access, newer estates often do not

Estate blocks in the older parts of Leopold run 500 to 750 square metres with clear side access, so an external conduit run to a carport or rear garage is straightforward and cheap. That is the easier half of the suburb.

The newer Gateway and Estuary estates drop to 350 to 550 square metres and the side access is often lost to a garage on the boundary. There the board is usually modern and near the garage anyway, so the run is short and it stops mattering. Two different geometries, similar final prices, for opposite reasons.

  • Older Leopold

500 to 750 square metres with clear side access. External conduit runs are cheap and simple.

  • Gateway and Estuary estates

350 to 550 square metres with access often lost, but a modern board close to the garage compensates.

  • Same price, different reason

One is cheap because the run is easy, the other because the run is short.

Salt without a beach

Leopold has no beach frontage, which leads people to assume salt is not a factor. Lake Connewarre is a saline estuary and Corio Bay is about two kilometres north, so the exposure is real even though nothing here feels coastal from the street.

It is milder than Ocean Grove or Torquay and it does not call for full marine-grade specification. What it does call for is stainless fixings rather than the plated screws that come in the charger box, coastal rated glands, and a mounting position under an eave or inside a garage where the geometry allows.

  • Saline estuary nearby

Lake Connewarre is saline and Corio Bay is about two kilometres north, so the exposure is genuine.

  • Not full marine spec

Milder than the open coast. Stainless fixings and coastal glands are enough here.

  • Inside the garage is best

Where the car parks in an attached garage, mounting inside removes the question entirely.

Single phase, load management and the Melbourne drive

Leopold streets are single phase on the Powercor network, so 32A and about 7.4kW is the ceiling, giving 40 to 50km of range per hour. On a 1980s brick veneer that has since gained ducted reverse cycle and an electric oven, adding a 32A continuous load is worth calculating rather than assuming.

Where maximum demand is tight, a load management device at $200 to $600 throttles the charger during peaks instead of tripping the main switch. For a household making the drive to Melbourne, an off peak overnight schedule recovers the round trip in a few hours and costs a fraction of public charging on the way.

  • Maximum demand calculated

Against the actual appliance list, because three decades of added load adds up on a single phase supply.

  • Load management

$200 to $600, and the standard answer here rather than chasing a phase conversion.

  • Off peak scheduling

Set at commissioning so the commute is recovered overnight on the cheapest window.

Scheduling, and what the install includes

Because Leopold is a permanent-resident suburb, we can book work here normally rather than around holiday occupancy the way we have to in Ocean Grove or Torquay. That genuinely helps, because it means a site visit and an installation can be planned close together in the same Bellarine block.

The install itself is prescribed electrical work. Own final subcircuit, cable sized for continuous load, correctly rated breaker and RCD protection suited to DC leakage under AS/NZS 3000, commissioned at the configured current with a Certificate of Electrical Safety issued under REC 37223.

  • Booked in Bellarine blocks

About 70km from Altona. We nominate the week rather than the hour and we do not claim same-day.

  • Occupied year round

Access is arranged normally here, which is not true of most of the peninsula.

  • Certificate and guarantee

Certificate of Electrical Safety under REC 37223, plus our 100% workmanship guarantee.

Leopold specifics

  • Ninety two per cent of occupied dwellings are separate houses and only about four per cent sit empty, so this is a permanent-resident suburb and jobs can be scheduled normally rather than around holiday occupancy.
  • The 1970s and 80s stock that dominates here usually has a serviceable board with limited spare ways, so a load calculation matters before adding a charger or a heat pump, and a garage sub-board is often the cheaper fix.
  • Older estate blocks of 500 to 750 square metres have clear side access, while the newer Gateway and Estuary estates drop to 350 to 550 with access often lost to a boundary garage.
  • Lake Connewarre is a saline estuary and Corio Bay is about two kilometres north, so salt exposure is real despite there being no beach frontage. It is milder than the open coast but it still affects fixings.

Answers

Leopold questions

Usually a sub-board in the garage fed from the main board, rather than replacing a healthy 1970s or 80s board just to find room. It puts the protection next to the charger and keeps the cost well below a full replacement at $800 to $3,500. We check the main switch rating and the enclosure before recommending either option.
